'99 SL2 Hard to Start Sometimes

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My daughters SL2 is sometimes hard to start. When it is I have gotten it started by flooring the gas and holding the key in the starter position for an extended period. It will sputter for a while and then kick in and run fine. It isn't throwing any codes and there is no consistency in when it does this. I have replaced the fuel filter. Thoughts?

it sounds like it could be your temperature sensor. The control module may think the engine is up to temperature when it really is not. This false reading from the sensor could be throwing of your air/fuel ratio when the engine is cold. Just a guess..

Could be the injectors are clogged or even the fuel pump not properly pressure rising the fuel system.

Can I check the temperature sensor simply by disconnecting it while cold and starting the engine? Also, what's the thought on coil packs? Can they go intermittingly bad?

Usually the engine will run really rough if the one of the coil packs are bad.

My 99 Saturn SC one had the same problem I had to hold the pedal to the floor to get it started. I took it to the shop and it is the crankshaft positioning sensor
