I have a friend with a '97 SL2 that had this problem. It was either one of the shift cables or one of the clips that connect to it.

One of your gear clips broke and/or fell off. Its a little thing that slides onto one of the two gear selectors on the transmission. It keeps the shift linkage for 2,4, and R on. If you feel comfortable doing it yourself i could make you a video showing what exactly youre looking for, and i could see if i have an extra laying around here. It takes less than a minute to slip it on.

Could you tell me what the clips are called that hold the shift cable into place with on the transmission?
