What is wrong with my little saturn?

Asked by Karen Sep 19, 2012 at 04:05 PM about the 1999 Saturn S-Series 3 Dr SC2 Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my 99 sl2 has been idling  high when stopped for a light, or traffic up to 3 rpms then will idle down sometimes cutting off. So far it has always started.  I also have a  knocking noise that is getting louder. I 'm wondering if my timing chain is stretching?

Not sure about the knock, but you may try replacing your coolant temp sensor, or the air temp sensor. Both would cause the funny idle and cutting out. My coolant temp sensor went and was extremely hard to start after it died like that.

I did have my radiator replaced a few months ago and at odd times the water indicator came on when everything was full. I wish I could just get a new Saturn, but GM had to kill that.... Thanks Dave
