the "check engine" light keeps coming on for no particular reason, and the system has been reset. any ideas?

Asked by woodsye Mar 17, 2014 at 11:31 PM about the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Touring Wagon FWD

Question type: General

Three days ago, the little symbol that looks like an engine came on with a loud ding
accompanying the signal.  I had no idea what it was about, so went to my garage
where a mechanic checked it out with his computer analyzer.  He said something
about the fuel mixture which I did not understand, but today I took it back to the dealer
(car was bought for me as a present the last Sunday of January, 2014) and the
mechanic there told me he found that there was kind of a computer "glitch" which had
hung up the reading on my garage man's computer.  The dealer mechanic said he reset
the computer and felt that should clear up this situation.  Well, it did not...the same
signal, ding, and little engine symbol came on this afternoon (the computer was reset
this morning.)

It sounds like an O2 sensor is the problem. Hard to tell for sure. Take it to a place like AutoZone and get them to scan the car's computer again. Other than the CEL coming on, how does it run?

I have had a 2006 PT Loser for less than five months, 150k miles. So far, I bought the pile of CRAP and right away, it needed a new pass lower motor mount, bushings and control arms. Since, I've had to replace the water pump and did the timing cause I was in there. Then, the drum brakes. The tie rods were bad too and the drivers side window got a busted wire that needed repaired. Also replaced the PCV valve, valve cover bolts AND the radiator reservoir had a hole I replaced. So, now, there is terrible knocking underneath no one can figure out. Heard a possible fricken steering rack and pinion and the damned front brakes are said to need knew rotors during the next job. Because those have ground down to fricken something like .9 from 1.2inch. Idk. At any rate, I Hate this car. Oh. 5he A.C. just thumped really bad too the other day. DO NOT BUY!! ESPECIALLY ON A FRIDAY THE 13TH!!!
