Why won't my car start?

Asked by katelynnroseleibold May 24, 2016 at 03:08 PM about the 1996 Chevrolet Lumina LS Sedan FWD

Question type: General

We bought this car only two months ago (96 Chevy Lumina LS)
The intake manifold gasket has been fixed, new struts shortly after we got
it, changed the oil, new rotors and pads, etc. The antifreeze light had been
coming on quite frequently and was leaking a bit. I've smelt gas once a few
blocks from my house. The battery is a bit touchy. Last week, I was coming
home from a town 10 miles away. Half-way home, the check engine light
went on and the temp gauge was at the top of the red. I didn't want to pull
over because I wasn't sure if it would start again; I wasn't about to be stuck
on the side of the road either. I got home and shut it off immediately. I
waited a few minutes and tried starting it again. It made a terrible noise so I
stopped. Waited again, and it made that same noise. I called my grandpa
(I'm a 17 year old female and know nothing about cars) to come and check
it over. He got there and it wouldn't even turn over. What happened to it? Is
there any way to fix it?? Please help!

I have a 97 Lumina I inherited. When it runs it runs good but when it doesn't it could be anything. Here's a car buying clue. Look under the hood. Can you see all the spark plugs, the battery and the oil filter without searching for them? If the answer is no to any of the above, close the hood and walk away.
