Alternator Not Charging

Asked by canjagman Jul 09, 2010 at 10:37 PM about the 2005 Jaguar X-TYPE 3.0L Sportwagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The battery light came on several days ago. Confirmed that the alternator was not charging. Checked the belt..tight. Changed the battery (dead cell). After several days the light came on again after driving the car until it was quite warm..alternator was not charging. Turn the car off for 10 minutes and the light stayed off. Drive for 10 minutes and it comes on. Have not checked the cables yet..the positive seems quite hot. Plan is to remove the alternator for check and rebuild. Car has only 50,000 miles so I am surprised at alternator failure.
Questions: what is the best way to remove the alternator? and has anyone any advice on the cause.

Well if the positive seems hotter than usual that usually means theres resistance in the wires, posibbly a break in the positive wire, just the same i would have the alternator checked out if the voltage regulator has gone out the alternator wont charge the battery, and unless Jag is doing things the old fashioned way the voltage regulater is housed in the alternator. Unfortinately i havent personaly replaced the alternator on a jag (plenty of electrical diagnosis).
