can you change the crank bearings with the engine still in the car on a 1996 3.8, five speed and what upgraded engine can you recomend that bolts to that tranny
It would be one pain in the ass to try and change crank bearings while the engine is in the car. I suppose it is possible, but don't do it that way. Workmanship would not be as good as having the engine upside down on a engine stand. Also the 3.8L engine is a great engine when taken care of.
If you have a bad knock you really want to do a proper tear down anyhow, and not just swap out bearings you think are bad. Who knows what else you'll find when you crack the engine open.
Do a you tube, I would love to see that done
If this is a high mileage engine you'll be better off pulling the engine and either rebuilding it or replacing it with a crate engine. It's 21 years old. As Ken said, who knows what you'll find inside. To answer your question, yes it can be done if you jack up the engine and remove the oil pan. But as Rowefast said, it's a real pain doing it that way!! HTH. -Jim
