Why is my 96 camero getting hot while idling or at a low speed?

here to find out why my 96 camero heats up  
when im Idling or in slow traffic. I havent
found out how hot it gets because I dont
want it to damage the engine. the fans run
when this happens and the temp inches up. It
never fails to drop back down on the open
road.

Since you know the fans are running, then you may want to check radiator and coolant flow. A radiator can gunk up with only a small portion of it still allowing coolant passage. Your water pump may also be worn, causing low coolant flow. An IR thermometer can check radiator, any cool spots indicate blockage/lack of flow. Then check for a worn water pump by squeezing upper radiator hose and feeling for pressure, at idle or with engine revved. (wear gloves because hose will be hot).

This is definitely an airflow problem. Make sure the front of the radiator and air conditioning condenser is not clogged with leaves, dirt, or other debris. Look for missing or damaged air deflectors or a missing or damaged fan shroud, if equipped. Hope that helps! Jim
