I could not find any reason to disengage the overdrive, so I just disassembled the shifter handle and cut the wires leading to the overdrive button. Now shifts perfectly into overdrive.

I just cleaned up my mess and let it stay undriven while I was at work. After work I started it and no longer seeing the light. All works well.
