2007 jeep compass struggles to start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2007 Jeep Compass... not the battery, not the starter motor... turns over just
fine.  Air filter just replaced.  I can hear the fuel pump before engaging the
starter motor.  When starter motor is engaged, engine turns over but chokes
and gasps and struggles to have ignition... kind of like dieseling, but worse ... if
I step on the accelerator pedal things improve slightly, but still won't run.

Most likely a corroded pin on one of the relays behind the front driver side wheel well panel. Had the same issue. Also had no radio for a few months until it completely corroded and caused the start up problem. mine kept cranking but never started. You'll most likely have to replace one or two of the relays and the socket in the relay board as well. Fairly easy to do. You'll be able to tell if this is causing the issue right away by pulling the relays one by one one. If there is corrosion it will be very obvious. It is a bright greenish blue color. I had to pins that broke off the relays flush to the board. And the wires at the back had corroded out of the sockets. Once fully repaired I got my radio back, I also noticed a significant improvement in the cvt transmission. Seemed much more responsive. Never even noticed I had an issue with it prior. Sweet bonus!! I also tie wrapped the relay box in a better location to prevent the same problem in the future. Good luck friend.
