Gear shifter handle broke off the shifter

My 1997 chevy malibu v6
automatic transmission on the
floor the handle broke off the
shifter because i couldnt get it out
of park i push the button on the
handle and it wouldnt go out of
park in the process the handle
broke off do i replace the entire
gear shifter to the transmission or
can i just replace the handle

Should be able to get the parts you need from the dealer. The reason that happen is there was something wrong with the shift interlock solenoid. Either the solenoid is bad or a wire is broken off. Common problem.
