I purchased a used 2004 Rainier from a dealer a week ago and today the engine light went on, not blinking just steady. I tightened the gas cap and have only added gas twice, bad gas maybe?

The good news is a blinking Check Engine Light indicates a more serious problem than a steady on light. Not much to go on here, especially since you don't mention any problems so an OBDII scan is called for. Many large auto-parts houses will scan it free, and you will get a code(s) that begins with P followed by four numbers...PXXXX. Before you buy anything , come back and post the codes here..in a new question so it will be seen . One of us will be happy to help point you in the direction of a cause and cost-effective fix ...Bad gas..unlikely. Possible but unlikely

I removed and replaced the gas cap and after driving it for about a mile or two the light went off. Should I still get a scan?

No..then don't worry about it. I should have mentioned that gas cap is the by far most common reason for a CEL to come on, the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) only know the EVAP system is not sealed, It has detected a "Leak" which is not really a leak but the OBD doesn't know that. Good news, All is well, don't bother with the scan
