Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just noticed that the buttons on the steering wheel are no longer lit.  And the right half of the heating console buttons are not lit?  How can something be half lit and the steering wheel lights all stop at the same time.  They both have nothing to do with each other??

I thought about that but for ALL the bulbs on the steering wheel and exactly half the bulbs on the heating control console to go bad at the same time doesn't seem to make sense. Not that it can't happen, but is VERY unlikely. Thanks though.

The steering wheel buttons are backlit with incadescent bulbs. Depending on car use, they are burned out. I believe yes everything burned out about same time. If it was a fuse, you'd have more lamps out. Sad part is, the wheel controls are obsolete. They were service as a complete unit. I would live with the wheel lutes out. Do you really want to go into the wheel disturbing the air bag. The airbag is more valuable then the lights. As to the heater control backlights, they can be easily replaced with 194

Add- heater control uses soldered in incandescent bulbs that require your display be exchanged. Gm no longer offers remans. Various jobbers sell replacement displays on eBay for 100 bucks. Quality of rebuilds vary. Forget the wheel switches unless you run across nos stock domewhere. No new inventory anywhere. I just lucked out and found a new ac heat panel new and 2 new gray wheel switches. Took a year to locate. Hope you have better luck then me. Every lit switch in Parks use tiny incandescent soldered bulbs, and I have not found exact size bulbs. Bulbs size have to fit precise lens diffusers, gm designed crap lit controls on 97-2005 Parks. Or check junk yards. Service life on bulbs is 5 yrs

Suggest you dim your dash to extend life of bulbs. Nothing is replaceable easily. Only a few things are leds. Most are lousy wheat bulbs. And getting into say the. digit temp display is difficult. The digital temp display also is known to fail. Check ebay

Finsl update- I was in error about 194 bulbs in dash. Everything looks like you have to pull part like gauge cluster and send to a regional electronic display jobber. Quality varies tremendously with some places working out of a basement. Ask gm dealer where they send their cores
