Mitsubishi Lancer 2006 Behind Steering Wheel

Asked by Jaraxlle Jan 19, 2018 at 05:28 PM about the 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer ES

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have been hearing a weird clicking noise
underneath the steering column cover. It started
during a random trip. I took the cover off and I saw
a white ribben with 5 pinkish lines bound up around
my column(see pic). Any idea what this is and what
I should do about it?

THAT is the spiral-wound cable from the clock spring. https://www.youcanic.com/clock-spring - you are going to need to fix this asap, or you'll lose all functions from steering wheel. Clicking is also a symptom of a bad clock spring (google "clock spring clicking" or "clock spring symptoms"). You can replace a clock spring yourself (it's fairly basic) but does require a calibration for steering angle sensor which requires a Lvl 3 OBDII scanner. If you buy parts at most auto parts shops they can loan certain tools. Good luck.
