My 2005 Volvo S60 check engine lights comes on periodically and the car shakes/sputters . What might cause the problem ?

Since the CEL is on, you have some codes stored in the system. Only way to truly know without guessing is to scan for the codes. Have your mechanic do it, or you can have a local auto parts store do it for free, or you can pick an OBDii generic code scanner for $20. The code will give you a clue as to what the problem is. Be it a vacuum leak, misfire, or faulty sensor.
