2003 Volvo s40 front struts engine 1.9T

Asked by Steven May 18, 2017 at 01:35 PM about the 2003 Volvo S40 1.9T

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Mechanic scared me off because he tried arguing against a second opinion, but I was really skeptical of his 1000$ price point to replace the struts on the front. Where can I get a list of all the parts required and where is a good place to get a reasonable estimate of individual price for parts? I'm definitely getting a second opinion and its really shady to argue against me doing so.

seems quite high for just front struts! if it included control arms, and ball joints it would be around their quote.

He is not using OEM, he said he gets after market though he did not specify which brand.

That's the thing he claimed everything had to go. From what I've been reading it's possible, though not necessarily true. I can see motivation to get me to replace every single piece near the front suspension and it's one of the reasons I wanted a second opinion and my suspicion was not helped by him trying to argue me away from talking to anyone else. Like yeah I get it, hold on to your business, but if your estimate is fair I'm going back to you. The car wont shatter to pieces if it gets driven to another shop on a bad spring, I'm sorry it just wont. It wont be great and I wont drive it to work, but come on. Isn't that behavior a little fishy? Fear mongering, dodgy answers, arguing against a second opinion...grr. Is this something a saturday mechanic buddy would be able to do safely if I got it a professional alignment after?
