There should be a dipstick right near the firewall on the driver's side. It's a yellow handle, and you'll have to look down to find it. Check your owner's manual for the proper procedure. I'm not sure if it's the same for the 960, but I know the FWD cars need to have the transmission up to temperature and you need to row through the gears and wait 2-3 minutes before checking, with the engine running.

It may actually be a plug-type dipstick with a square in it for a 3/8" drive extension. I think it depends on the model year.

The dip stick looks like a plug, but you can remove it easily by releasing the spring clip on the dip stick tube. Wear a long sleeve on your arm because you'll be rubbing against lots of scratchy stuff when you reach in there.
