2006 Mini Cooper check engine light turning on and off randomly

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 convertible Mink Cooper. 93,000
miles on it. Let me preface by saying I have a faulty
sensor so I have random lights on all the time. I just
haven't had the $200 to repair the thing yet.
The main problem is that my engine repair light has
been randomly turning off and on the past month.
Had a buddy check out the car for any leaks or oil
issues, we found none. I am paranoid because I
love this car so I've been listening to it run and
trying to hear if anything sounds off. Everything is
fine. It runs great and everything is working and I'm
having no other issues besides that stupid light. It
will be on solid for a day, then be off the next. Or it
will turn off when I park and start it again. I'm taking
it in to get checked out tomorrow to see what the
codes show. I read somewhere that if the gas cap
isn't on exact this causes the light to come on so I
will have to test that in the morning. Other than that,
what else could possibly be making the service
engine light be so random like that?

It is hard to say, you will know when you get the codes read. Some codes are related so its hard to say if it has anything to do with that bad sensor. Just have it checked out.

Do you mean the service engine soon light? If you fill the tank while it's running the light will come on then reset. Scan for codes and post them

I got the codes read. Apparently my O2 sensor is busted. They said it won't harm anything and not to worry. I guess I can add that to the list of sensors to get fixed when I have the money.
