1998 Lumina LS 3.1L V6 is the shift linkage manual, electric or vacuum?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1998 Chevy Lumina LS 3.1L V6 has reverse and 1st gear only, while driving transmission won't shift into 2nd and drive gear. Shift lever is on column and will only move to 2nd, Drive, OD, Reverse and Park won't move into 1st. Trans fluid is full, good color, not burnt. Need to know if the shift linkage is manual, electric or vacuum?

Call the parts store. Or look in your owners manual. I would change filter and fluid. Even if it looks good the filter can be the issue. Especially if it hasn't been changed in 35,000 miles..just sayin.... Good luck..

If you are low on fluid, the transmission may go into emergency mode and keep it in the low gears to limp to a repair shop. Check the fluid level if you have a transmission stick. also see if it is clear or looks burnt, which will be a dark red. If low or dark, do have it serviced at a GOOD reliable transmission shop. Before having them sell you a rebuild job, get a second opinion from a different garage.
