Do I need to follow dealer's suggestion to replace transmission sensor?

car has 120,000 miles that don't show it usage.  serviced regularly by
dealer and driven by my wife.  Yes, a school teacher.  Engine light went on
and had our dealer do the computer search and recommended replace gas
cap, (did it $60...... same light back on the next week. Dealer now says that
I should now place transmission sensor for $3000...... even though the
'Check Engine Light' has not gone on for 220 miles. Do I spend the money
to do this or sell the car or trade it this Spring?  Thanks my heart isn't in
wanting to sell it as with new Michelins 2500 miles ago and other care
taken since new, it is absolutely a perfect vehicle.  your thoughts please.

Hell no, take that car to anyone you want, this is why they are called SEALERSHIPS

make sure you take to a transmission shop, a good one...

Get your own code reader ($50). See what codes the car is putting out. Mine has 132k on it and that device saves me a TON of money. Don't take a dealers word for diagnostics, better see for yourself. Auto zone will do it for you for free, but I like having my own at home so I can Google what the codes mean and plan accordingly. Be advised, rarely will a repair shop take parts you buy and put them on...it costs them money and there is higher potential for faulty parts when you buy them retail. Hope all this helps.
