My 2001 Mazda Miata only gets about 12 mpg in the city.

It's a manual 6-speed, and the engine light recently came on, went off again,
but is now back. It's got 61,000 miles on it. Any insight on this?

Begin by having it read for codes, even if the check engine light is NOT on the computer will have stored information and codes. Discount auto stores will read codes for no fee. write them down.
