98 blazer

Asked by Jan 20, 2017 at 06:02 PM about the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer LS 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Here's one for the mechanically inclined .... GF
says her streering becomes tight AFTER the engine
light goes out and drives like shit ...And when the
engine light comes back ON it steers just fine ... I'm
not a mechanic but know enough to get by ...
Although 2 mechanics said there's nothing wrong
with it...But she says it's noticeable and knows
something isn't right ... Also Can there be a hidden
code the a reader isn't picking up?? because it
threw an o2 sensor only ? This thing is driving me
nuts

Well I wish I was there to check it out but of course I am not. Looking at the steering components for this vehicle It is possible the Front Steering Idler Arm Bracket Assembly could cause the symptoms you describe. This is a sealed unit that rotates that has either bushings or bearings in it. Looking at an aftermarket part it has a grease fitting on it. No fluid runs threw it. The OEM probably doesn't have a grease fitting on it, so the bushings, bearings are worn. When the check engine light is on she must not have the motor running, so she is just turning the steering wheel back and forth to where the resistance starts in the wheel. On any vehicle it is hard to turn a wheel when the engine is off. She can't be turning the wheels right or left. Never the less, this is my 2¢ to the problem. Check out the link so you can see a picture.
