2000 VW Passat starts but won’t drive

I was on the highway and I heard a clunk like
maybe I ran over something or something fell
off the vehicle.  I pulled over- nothing.  Car is
still running- but now it won’t move when I
put it any of the gears (automatic trans).  I did
call for a tow because I am now stuck..
