is it dangerous to drive this car if the check engine light is on?

It's not necessarily dangerous but you should check it out and repair accordingly. Go to any auto parts store for a free scan. They will explain the codes and you can Google them for more information. Your wheels won't fall off, but you might be walking home if it quits running.

F_O_R is right. Any place is a bad place when you're stranded. Calling 911 only assures that someone will eventually get there to pick up the body and file a report. Sorta like Detroit.
