You can do this. You can also install an electrical heater in the car. There are good aftermarket heaters available; they're easy to install and they don't cost too much.

From one Senior to another, I have no experience with in-car add-on heaters, but they're available in car parts stores & websites. Although I've heard from people in cold climates, I wouldn't know which are good. But frankly, you plug them into a lighter or auxiliary opening and they just produce heat from a resistor: how problematic could they be? Google what you want and you'll find availability & reviews (if you can believe internet reviews).
