Power to road cuts out intermittantly

Asked by Joshua Dec 13, 2013 at 09:23 AM about the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 1.8T Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am having problems with my 2003 VW 1.8T Jetta (manual trans). I will be driving
usually on the expressway not accelerating just keeping speed and all of a sudden I
will lose power to the tires, and a few seconds later the power to the tires will just
come back. Today I had the problem but lost power for about 10 seconds. The engine
does not turn off and seems to be functioning fine. I shift into other gears and only get
power whenever it decides to kick in. Any ideas on what the problem could be?
Thanks.

Do you have a Check Engine Light (aka MIL)? If so, scan the car and find the error codes. If not, you may have a bad TPS (throttle position sensor) or MAF (mass airflow sensor). TPS would require replacement. As for the MAF, it may be dirty and just needs a thorough cleaning. Good luck.
