Reverse pops out over 2000 rpms???
I have a 98 vw Jetta gt 2.0 5 speed. The reverse
works however it makes a wierd clunking noise/
wind-up noise if I'm backing up a hill I can't go over
2000 rpms or it pops out of gear into neutral with a
loud clunk (assuming that noise after popping out
is tranny from the gear slipping) this is my first vw
but not my first 5 speed I know nothing about vw
but would like to learn to keep the car. Any
suggestions would be highly appreciated. :)
the clunking may well be a chipped gear tooth, that would tend to walk the shift fork away from engaged ,,, slow down and hold the stick in gear, also low gear lube will often cause kick out in forward gears for sure
So it's could be worn shift linkage bushings so it is not going into reverse completely, or you truly have a tranny problem, the windup noise as you described it could very well be a worn reverse gear or bushings. I would take it to a shop that works on VW and have it checked out, this old I wouldn't take it to a dealer as they will hit you with a bunch of stuff just cause it is old.
