Does VW (Golf, Polo, Jetta) consume more gas on highways because they dont have an Overdrive button?

Asked by WW2 Mar 03, 2015 at 04:34 AM about the 2002 Volkswagen Golf GL 2.0

Question type: General

I want to buy a VW automatic. But I sacred it might not be as economic on highways as
it has no overdrive button (Gear 5) in the automatic gearbox. Should I re-consider?

The car will still get good gas mileage on the HWY. If it is a nice car and has been serviced correctly I would purchase it. The Golfs are great cars.

VW automatics usually have one more gear than their model year competitors which effectively is overdrive. Today's VW automatics have 6 forward gears and get equally good fuel economy as their manual transmission counterparts in a given model. As with all things VW, adhere to the scheduled maintenance and all will be as it should.
