The part is $50-$80 on Rockauto.com -- which engine do you have?

It is listed under 1996 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 2.0L L4 : Ignition : Crankshaft Position Sensor --- It looks like a one bolt installation.

Is the vehicle running at this time? The crank position sensor is actually a function of the distributor on the OBDII engines. ECS Tuning and FCP Euro are good online sources for replacement OEM distributors. If the vehicle is not running, be wary. There's a ring mounted to the last lobe of the crank that provides a signal for the crank position. It's secured with 3 small bolts. If it comes loose, the vehicle will run extremely rough...not to mention, there's loose metal in the oil pan. The cost to repair is pretty steep, too.
