Engine occasionally sputters at high RPM, but after restart works fine

Asked by Jimmy Oct 14, 2017 at 12:17 AM about the 1993 Volkswagen EuroVan 3 Dr GL Passenger Van

Question type: General

I have a '93 VW Eurovan that has started occasionally started sputtering at
higher RPMs. It will typically start when I'm in 5th gear going down the
interstate, and will continue at higher RPM's in all gears. However if I restart
the car, the problem disappears altogether. Sometimes I'll do the restart while
rolling, shift back into gear, and the issue stops. Any thoughts?

This isn't an answer, but I'd like to say that I think I have the same issue. 92 Eurovan that will stutter hard at moderate RPMS (2500 and up). This coincides with a slightly warmer than normal engine temp (meaning that the engine isn't cooling itself as well as it should as the outside weather doesn't impact this). Also has a high idle when this problem is in the works. Generally the van runs and idles perfect.
