how to get my vw cabrio 2001 out of Park position it is locked now

my car is locked in the Park position. This happened once in the past and
was fixed by manipulating the cover in center console which revealed the by
pass switch to get our of Park. I cannot remember how it was done. Help
please

I'm not sure how to access the console to allow it to be moved but the cause of the issue is a bad break light switch - replace that and problem is repaired
Thank a lot. I appreciate it but I did have a Triple A mechanic manipulate the plastic around the gear shift box, exposed a "bypass switch" and then moved the gear out of Park with ease. I will follow your suggestion when I am able to drive again.
Either the brake light switch like MStamps says, or there is a locking solenoid in the counsel that a wire breaks off of.
