what could cause the total lose of engine oil

I noticed a lot of oil in area of filter and oil pan.

That does not sound good at all. Could be any number of things. Was you driving it and felt loss of power maybe heard some funny knocking? If so possibly slung a rod thru oil pan. Need to inspect under it for where it's coming from.

well judging by it being an older modal car what engine do you have in it ? im guessing the 1.8 or 2.8L engine. You may have jsut blew out a cam seal try to find where exactly the oil is coming from and get back to us.
