I have a 1998 VW cabrio conv. with 98,000 miles. How do I take care of the transmission? Is there anything I should do to keep it running?

How do I take care of the transmission? And how do I know if it's breaking down? It has 98,000 miles. Is there anything special I could do to make it last longer or run better?

If you have an automatic, it's not always as simple as pulling the plug. In an automatic, just pulling the plug will not drain what is currently in the tranny itself. To properly get all the old fluid out, you will have to bring it to a garage that has the capability of purging the entire system. Also, there is a very fine screen in the bottom of your tranny pan. Have the mechanic change that out also. Most people never do that because they have no idea one is in there. If that screen is plugged with grit, changing the oil is only half the battle........
Yes, Reelin has great advise to you Also, do maintenance on this car every 30-40k miles. Keep that fluid CLEAN!!!! Let me emphasize that once again... Keep it CLEAN. These transmissions are very fragile. They are notorious of failing... like MINE. If you shop on craiglist or any of the other sites you'll see the 90's and newer going for cheap and all with trans problems and they AREN'T CHEAP to repair.
