Passenger side engine knocking tied to RPM drop

Asked by Asphere Apr 27, 2013 at 10:23 PM about the 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier LS Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 99 Chevrolet cavalier 2.2L.  Lately whenever my RPMs drop while at speeds lower than about 30mph there is a single knock coming from the passenger side of the engine.  It only happens once per RPM drop.  Once I am at higher speeds it doesn't happen anymore.  Also, if the car is in neutral and I press on the gas and release it there is no noise, but if I hold the break and lightly press on the gas and release it (dropping the RPMs) there is the same knock.  Any ideas?  Thanks!
