How do I get the battery out of the back when I can't open the hatch BC the battery is dead? 2004 BMW X5

You should be able to use the key on the driver's door to gain access to the interior of the vehicle. Then follow the attached graphic to manually release the liftgate (upper portion of the hatch) and tailgate (lower portion of the hatch), in that order. But if the battery isn't too far gone, I would try to jump-start the car instead and just use the central locking system. You don't need access to the rear-mounted battery for this; BMW provides a post under under the hood for the positive terminal, which can be accessed by opening a small tabbed box toward the windshield that's marked with a "+" sign. And of course you can just connect the negative side of the jumper cable to any chassis point of the car.
