87 Celica and Timing belt

I have an 87 Celica ST that I love.  I recently broke the timing belt while driving.  After replacing the belt, it no longer has any power, needs to go to nearly 3k rpms to shift.....did i damage the engine or has my mechanic made a mistake?

Well if this happen after t-belt was replace it could be that might be out of timing.You need to check the timing marks again,make sure that it did not jump while you were installing the belt.
