It will make the engine rev to higher rpm's and tranny shift hard due to being in low lock. The transfer case shift motor Is stuck and needs replaced.

Did you put the transmission on neutral before shifting to 2 hi? You then should try backing up 30 ft to allow low range to disengage

find a hill, put it in neutral and roll very slow mashing 2hi over and over. When the motors go out sometimes they can shift to and from extremes.
