check the fuses for the tail lights/brake lights. There should be a fuse panel under the hood, and another inside the car near the dash.

I had the same frustrating problem.I changed bulbs needlesly! I got a pieceof wood about 18'' long and wedged it between the driver's seat and the brake pedal and used the power seat to engage the brakes.Turn on the ignition, and walk to the rear. The brake light should be on. If not, with a slight pressure on the brake light bulb, the bulb will light up.I used a long nose plier to very slighty twist the metal strip which is the power to the brake light. It stayed on and your problem is solved. spray some WD40 on the contacts for added anticorrosion.Remove that piece of wood and drive away safely.

Evidently, there is a repair bulletin in this. It is a wiring harness replacement issue. MB makes the repair part and are not doing it under warranty? Can't figure that one out.
