It it possible for a maintianed 2005 SL w/26000 miles to need a new transmission?

2005 SL500 w/26,000 miles. Dealer maintained.The aux battery failed and many functions did not work. The car would not shift out of 1st gear. The battery was replaced and it might have been a coincidence but it seemed strange that the car would not shift, even after a new battery was installed. The dealer claims there is no maintainence possible on the transmission and a new one will be required for the price of a small house!!26,000 miles, maintained, never raced and now a new transmission???? any ideas

No, the engine light is not on. I thought it might be the transmission control unit needed to be reset after the battery failure.

While you were writing I was online arranging for a flatbed to pick the car up and have it delivered to a private shop who has a factory trained mechanic. We have discussed the issue and the last thing he thinks it might be is a new transmission. Thank you

This is usally a very easy fix. First check to see if there is a trans fluid leak under car. If not minor leaks to the interior of trans can cause a $15 sensor issue. It happened to my 2005 SL500. Car shifted well under power just clunked when putting from park to drive or to reverse gear. Also notice it when it downshifts to first gear. Some people witness a car that will not go out of first gear and the solution is the same. I would report that Mercedes Dealer to Mercedes and to the BBB as well. CROOKS
