What is the difference between a 2001 Mercedes-Benz SL500 and SL500R and how do you tell the difference?

How do you tell the difference between the 2001 Mercedes Benz SL500 and SL500R.  We were looking at a Mercedes Benz SL500 and was told that it paced the Formula One Race and was only 1 of 20 made.  How can you tell for sure that this  was the case.

I would get on some "benz" groups/forums and ask around, Them being "Benz-heads" they would be able to direct you much faster and have the right info. Best of luck.
