is there a way to check if my motor is still good without removing the heads? The timing chain broke and i believe its the only problem but i wanted to make sure before i fix it.

Without a cam chain it will be hard to do a compression test and you risk further damage to the engine if you turn it over with a broken timing chain.

Agree with F_O_R, impossible to do a compression test without a functioning valve train.

They do break occasionally and when they do they look like the photo.

Oldstorqnpower, I have been a certified mechanic for 18 years. just because you think it is unlikely to happen doesn't mean it cant. if the timing chain breaks the vehicle will automatically shut off because it loses oil pressure so there is no way of driving it beyond detonation symptoms. I only asked the question because i wanted to see if someone has come up with a quicker or easier solution. thank you everyone for the replies.

Question? Has this engine been torn down? If not I would at least have sufficient parts removed to investigate exactly what the problem is with it.

I would start by draining the oil, look for metal fillings, stick a magnet in the drain hole try to find some, if you get some you have something broken, if you do not, you could still could have damage? this is just simple thing to start with, (make sure you add oil back in )
