My 2001 E430 4matic makes a loud thump
or clunk noise when shifting from
/park to reverse/reverse to drive/etc. also a
similar sound when
decelerating/accelerating rapidly

There's 2 rubber donuts on the prop shaft that runs between the gearbox and the rear differential, 1 at each end. 1 or possibly both needs replacing. The clunk you're hearing is the prop shaft being allowed to twist because of the damaged rubber not holding it in place properly.
