If it only has just started to lose oil like mine did and it was actually at 165,000 when it started it is the head gasket. From 96-2000 this model was notorious for this issue. Some can go at 50k, some at 250k and cost is around $2000-3g's to replace it. Good indie will do for $1500. Having said that really keep an eye on oil levels and upgrade to an oil that will suit the age of the car as they are much thicker and you should find that it will slow it right down a lot, and much cheaper if u can deal with an oily driveway....

A 2000 E320 with 170,000 miles on it , don't even worry about 1/2 qt. every 6 months .. .. If it starts losing alot more & more often check the Gaskets and see if their is any oil stains where your car is parked ..Honestly your worrying is taking a toll on you & not your car ..

Greetings friar...you are uniquely adept at understanding people...perhaps you can understand paintings too...painted near 200 before I started this whole cargurus thing~ a headache...hung on my Grandmother's wall until she died in 2005~

Try using one of the high mileage oils. there called high mailer oil GTX Valvoline Mobil one royal purple pensol all make one of their own. I have 250000 miles on my van and truck neither one leak or burn a drop of oil . It may take two oil changes but it's worth it they do come in synthetic also.

Judge I can't help you with the paintings ..I have a God giving gift of being unable to draw a straight line even with the use of a ruler ..

You are probably burning oil not leaking it.The high mileage oils have additives the help the rings on the Pistons to actually swell so ever slightly to keep the oil from passing up into the combustion chamber. When oil does make it to the combination chamber of course you burn it .The small lost you speak of leads me to this educated guess with out being there to truly diagnose your car. That adds up to a quart a year.I know plenty of Honda owners that would swop there 2 quarts a month burn off to your 1 quart a year.BTW if you check you oil 2 a month and add to get back to correct fill level your car will run no different.

I need total mile and month mile to give the right answer, but if your car have high tot miles check the compression and intake valve guide and seal clearance. /u
