What causes my 2000 impala 3.4 heat gauge to red line but I the radiator is at normal operating temperature ?

The heat gauge will go up and down then red line. Last night it went all the way up and the car would not run right. When this happened the radiator was cool enough I could put my hand on it without getting burned, it seams to be at normal operating temperature, there is no steam coming from anywhere and the system is full of good antifreeze. The radiator was replaced less than a year ago and the system flushed.

is you rad cap on tight or your expantion tank cap and are they in go condition
Radiator cap is new and was tight when my son left with the car and the expansion cap was on properly but, I'll have him check both of them when he gets out of class. Thanks
I'm with tennisshoes on this one. It could be a thermostat or a bad sending unit to the gauge. Are you getting heat out of the vents when the heat gauge goes to the redline? Hopefully it's not a bad intake or head gasket or worse a cracked head.
Third vote for thermostat. Reason the radiator didn't get hot because the malfunctioning thermostat wouldn't let the water trapped in the block start circulating through the radiator.

Mine us doing the same it want blow hot air and it runs hot nothing is leaking and I done got a new radiator ,thermostat,water pump and more.and it says low coolant level but I got coolant in it Do you think its the heating core and did you get yours fixed?

I've done all of the above and it still Red Line car runs great no problem can find out what's going on.
