Mercedes transmission compatibility (c-class)

Asked by mercbenz777 Oct 21, 2012 at 03:01 PM about the 1997 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 230 Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am interested in purchasing a 97 c230 Mercedes and was wondering if a transmission from a 96 c220 would be compatible to install on the c230. I believe they are both 4 cylinder engines.

CONSIDER benz, 230, = 2.3 liter, 220, = 2.2 liter, in europe the letter defines chassis size, and numbers indicate engine....with that wiring harnesses may be different, (i know no positive answer there), but you must have the "tag", or transmission codes to match them, and see if they are compatible, easiest way, call any junk yard, and repeat the above question., they have a computer system, that will research it in 2 seconds vs. me or you on google all day, i know the 230 is a 5 speed, 220 i am not positive....hope i helped.
