I have a 2001 Chevrolet venture and its over heating the thermostat was taken out and it looks like there is oil in the water

That's usually a sign of a bad head gasket. Sure hope I'm wrong.

Do you think what you thought was oil in the coolant was actually melted wax? Automotive thermostats have a wax pellet in their construction to help them operate. Possible to believe your thermostat leaked out the wax which caused it not to function properly.

For sure its a thick sludge. I can clean the cap and the very next stop its back. It collects at cap
