Just pissing in the wind on this, but I had a randomly on and off CEL on my car for a few weeks, turns out the timing belt was being tugged on because one of the pulleys/cogs was failing. Eventually it broke and I lost my timing belt, fortunately I was parked and it was just idling and just stopped and somehow I didnt grenade my engine. But, if yours is a timing belt, have it and the pulleys and cogs, water pump, whatever checked out. Might be totally wrong, but that's what mine was from.
