Truck stalled then ran poorly without reason

Asked by Jeff Feb 15, 2016 at 02:15 PM about the 2003 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My ram truck stalled a few days after tuneup.
When it finally started it was starving for power.
After stopping & idling it in neutral for about 20 min
or so I reed it up a couple of times then it regained
power. What's the problem and solution here?

Is the Service Engine or Check engine light on? If so, go have the code read. It could be something as simply as the CPS needing to be replaced (which is a pretty simple job). It could really be a number of things, so a code read will be your best bet. AutoZone, usually does one for free.

No idiot lights appeared on the dash at all. Could this be a charging problem? I hope it's not the fuel pump as cost of replacement and labor in Canada is way high on that part. A few days later the check engine light did came on but wasnt running poorly. The code explained the problem was not tightening the fuel cap with enough clicks. I was told to correct it by just getting the fuel vent filter canister blown out. I bought this truck from a relative and it's seen a lot of gravel roads. Is the mechanic correct?

The mechanic could be correct however, how old is the gas cap, it could simply be that for check engine light. I would start with replacing the cap for that issue Regarding the stalling, it could be the fuel filter (I don't know that pump would allow operation of the vehicle if it was damaged). The filter on some older dodges require the tank to be dropped to swap it out but don't panic. If you know a reputable mechanic ask them to take a look at it AND CALL YOU BEFORE FIXING anything. They can do a pretty good troubleshooting diagnostic on 1 hrs worth of labor (it might cost $85-$100 but it will save HUNDREDS vs. you letting an un trustworthy mechanic gouge you and take you for a ride). I don't think its the charging system or the battery light would have illuminated. Even when the tensioner belt was bad in my old 04 Ram the batter light came one and blinked. Sorry I couldn't be more specific Jeff. Best of luck man!
