2002 Dodge Ram 1500 engine swap to 2004

Asked by MichaelandMelissa Mar 15, 2020 at 08:49 PM about the 2002 Dodge RAM 1500 ST RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with a 4.7
engine. It is pillowing smoke. I bought a beat up
2002 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd with 77000 from an
auction. What would I have to do if anything to
swap the engine from the 2002 to the 2004? I’m
new to the dodge game and have found some
conflicting info on the matter.

I'm willing to bet the 02 is JTEC and the 04 in NGC, you'll need to verify this by counting the number of plugs on the pcm. 4 plugs is NGC, 3 plugs is JTEC. If I'm right, and they are different, you will have to swap the tone rings from the crank as well as the cam shaft. Which means the crank shaft will have to come out. Honestly, in my opinion, it would be easier to change the head gasket. You could do that without pulling the motor.
