Brake Hose Replacement question

Asked by Darrin Sep 21, 2014 at 09:46 PM about the 2001 Dodge RAM 1500 ST Club Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A rusted brake line gave way that went from drivers side brake hose to passenger side brake hose on a 2wd
rear wheel abs 2001 Dodge Ram. The Service associate at Advanced gave me the wrong brake line at the store
and I ended up trying to put the wrong fittings into my old brake hoses and stripped them. Now I am about
to replace both front brake hoses after purchasing the correct parts.

However I see a pin (possibly a set pin) on the fitting of each new hose where it attaches to the caliper. I
took off the drivers side old brake hose and it seems like there is only a round bump where the pin was on
the old hose, but then I realized that there is no hole for a set pin on the caliper. So I looked at the
passenger side and see that this pin is sticking up into the air from the old brake hose and doesn't even
touch the caliper.

I'm just trying to verify if this pin on the brake hose to caliper fitting is used or not. After hours upon
hours of searching online I still can not find any videos of replacing brake hoses on a dodge ram.

No i don,t think so,you are talking about the small pin on fitting top right edge?

But ,i think it is made to go down toward caliper, sure you have the right and not the left?Pin would run right at the curved edge to help line up proper.

The two brake hoses are different in looks from each side, so I was able to distinguish easily which part went on which side. When I purchased the brake hoses I saw the pins and assumed they were set pins. However, because of this assumption I took off the drivers side without taking heed to looking at it exactly, and found that there is not a hole for a pin to fit into. In wondering if the old hose's pin could have formed into the caliper (most of the pin on this one was missing), I looked at the passenger side and saw the pin sticking straight up into the air. Without knowing if this was replaced before and done wrong or right, I am at a standstill. Why would there be a pin on it, if it is not used for anything? Or, because this part is used for different vehicles as well, is this for a different style vehicle? From what I see the banjo bolt has a hole in it, that I assume has to line up perfectly with the hole on the hoses fitting? So do I need to drill the caliper where a hole used to be, or is the passenger side done right on this vehicle? Never having replaced these before, I am unsure of what to do.
